Improved Insomnia and Daily functioning in Patients with Depresive
Disorder
The very recent study proved that Zolpidem
improved sleep quality and sleep impact on daily activities in -
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) patients. That was a multi-center,
double-blind, parallel-group. randomized, pacebo controlled study
in 383 adults (age 21 to 64 with co-morbid insomnia and MDD) ).
Researchers assessed treatment efficacy through daily patient-reported
Morning Sleep Questionnaires and during bi-weekly visits for eight
weeks. If the patients were part of an additional 16 week treatment
period the visits were every forths week. The mentioned questionay
measured the ptimary efficacy outcome of total sleep time in addition
to secondary measurements of sleep onset latency, wake time after
sleep onset, number of awakenings, quality of sleep and sleep related
next day functioning.
The director of the Sleep Disorders and Research
Center at Henry Ford Hospital, Thomas Roth, PhD, states: "The
results of this study demonstrate that Zolpidem Tartrate can be
considered a viable treatment option for the insomnia MDD patients
experience and help them get the good night's sleep they need to
improve their next-day functioning."
Zolpidem has awakened a
woman from coma
Amy Pickard, 23 years old, has been in a coma for the last 6 years
due to a heroin overdose. She was unable to eat or breathe for herself
since falling unconscious in 2001 and she was reduced to a vegetative
state.
After taking part in a study of the Zolpidem side-effects,
her eyes have begun to sparkle and she has even managed to stand.
Amy is now able to breathe on her own and even focus on objects
throughout her room, she reacts to strong-tasting food and is beginning
to formulate words. Her mother says it is remarkable and she can
see Amy fighting to get through.
The result of a worldwide trial of Zolpidem as
a treatment for people in comas, is that some 60% of patients have
apparently started to showing signs of life.
